Abstract:
The article explores the itinerary Rome--Paris--Rome which provides a key for reading dramatist and novelist Nikolai Gogol's fragment "Rome." Topics covered include the visual imagination of Gogol and his need for mediated distance, the creation of a travel narrative with geographic coordinates and itineraries and the attempt of Gogol to mobilize his reliance on vision and distance in the services of a Grand Tour narrative.
